I was enjoying earning money again and making my way in life (house bought, career back on track type stuff). I was definitely making the most of holiday times, even bank holiday weekends, to recapture a glimpse of that fun, free-wheeling feeling of adventure. Travelling around South America had also given me a deeper confidence to try new things. This included my first foray into yoga practice.

On one such bank holiday weekend I drove from Chester to Bristol to hook up with Carry again, who I had spent some of my time travelling with in South America. We then headed onto Cornwall for some camping, surfing and chilling out time. It was heaven, an escape from our new ‘late 20s coming up to 30’ professional lives. Nothing like roughing it a bit again to reconnect with the outdoors and give you that feeling of truly living life to the full.

After surfing and boogie boarding Carry and I decided to make the most of our last morning and take a jog along Saunton Sands on the Devonshire coast. It’s a lovely long stretch of flat beach, perfect for running on. There was nothing unusual about getting ready, heading out from the car in our running gear, other than Carry musing over her new ‘skort’, a type of gym pant with a frill over it to make it look like a mini skirt. ‘Perfect,’ she said. ‘I can stuff the keys down the pant lining and it’ll be like a pocket.’ As we set off from the car we passed an amiable old man with his dog who bid us a good jog and off we went enjoying the fresh air, views of the beach and stretching out our limbs after another night sleeping in a tent.

Nicely stretched, wind-blown and aching from our forty minute or so run we returned to the car. However, that sinking back into a warm car seat feeling and the start to our long journey back home in bank holiday traffic was going to be delayed… Carry exclaimed that the car key was no longer in her skort. Her disbelief swiftly turned into panic but for some reason I still felt quite calm about our situation and figured that there was going to be a way out of this, somehow. The only immediate thing we could think of was to try and retrace our footsteps, or rather that of many other footsteps that marked the way back and forth along the sand for miles. Unsurprisingly with the tide now coming in we returned to the car about a half hour later without the key. Then what seemed like out of nowhere the same elderly man with his dog that we had passed at the start of our jog wandered over and asked, ‘What’s the problem girls?’ After explaining the predicament we were in he said, ‘I’ll go and find your keys, you just wait here girls, I’ll be back soon.’

It wasn’t like we could do much else, everything we had was locked inside the car.
